Belgrade Archdiocese

The building of the Belgrade Archdiocese has been located in the center of Belgrade since 1926 in the building of the former Austrian Legation, which was built in 1884. It is one of the most significant achievements of Belgrade architecture from the end of the XIX century, built in the spirit of academicism with neo-Renaissance elements. There is a spacious landscaped garden within the building. Significant historical events related to the outbreak of the First World War took place in this building. The competent metropolitan archbishop is Monsignor Ladislav Nemet. According to the sources of the Belgrade Archdiocese, about 60,000 Catholic believers live in Serbia.


The Blessed Virgin Mary – cathedral of the Archdiocese of Belgrade

The parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in a part of the city called Neimar. Right next to it is the parish church. In 1925 was completed: the construction of the temporary church, parish office, and monastery was. The bells were cast in the cultural-historical region Savoy. It is also known as the "French church" because of the presence of the French when it was built. The construction of a new church began in 1938, designed as a memorial church to the French and Serbian soldiers who died on the Thessaloniki front. There was a break of almost 40 years after the Second World War. During the 80s, the church was additionally decorated and painted. The church was consecrated in 1988 when the Belgrade Archdiocese received a new cathedral. The monastery was remodeled and rebuilt for spiritual exercises and was named Dom Ivan Capistrano after the saint who has great merit for the liberation of Belgrade from the Turks. A well-known Italian company is making a new organ for the church. The cathedral is the place of all main liturgical gatherings, pilgrimages, and concerts.


The Co-Cathedral of Christ the King

The Church of Christ the King is located in Krunska Street in Vračar. The beginnings of the parish date back to the end of the 19th century. When the chapel of St. Ladislav was built in the courtyard of the present church. The church was officially founded in 1924. It was remodeled in 1926. The same year bells and the first organ in Belgrade were acquired, which are used today. With the efforts of Nuncio Pellegrinetti and Roman Pope Pius XI, the church received significant funds for interior decoration. Following the provisions of the Vatican Council in 1962, the church was renovated. The works were executed and designed by the distinguished Roman artist Augusto Ranocchi. Until 1988, the church was the cathedral church of the Belgrade Archdiocese.


Church of St. Anthony of Padua

The church is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua in honor of the 700th anniversary of his death. He is one of the most revered Western Christian saints. He is originally from Lisbon and today rests in the Italian city of Padua. The church was built in 1932 according to the project of Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik. It represents a return to ancient models of construction from the beginning of early Christian and early Byzantine architecture. The main space consists of a circular part, a rotunda with a diameter of 25 meters and a height of 17.5 meters, and a bell tower with a height of 52 meters, which was built in 1962. On the altar is a bronze sculpture of the patron saint of the church - the work of Ivan Meštrović. In 2010, was declared a cultural monument.


Parish of the Saint Peter the Apostol

The history of the Jesuits in Belgrade is linked to the creation of St. Peter's Church. During the reign of the Turks and the great battles, the Jesuits tried to settle in Belgrade on several occasions. The first humanistic school in the Balkans was founded here. New hope came with the liberation of Belgrade under the leadership of Eugene of Savoy. But in a short time, the city is returned to the Turks. After the abolition of the order of Jesuits, it was not until 1930 that the inductees came to Belgrade again. A church is being built in the yard of a house in Makedonska Street in Belgrade. A baroque painting of the Virgin and Child is being returned from Petrovaradin. That event represents the only memory from the founding period. Masses are celebrated in English and Hungarian. Today, the house is under the protection of the Belgrade Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments. The parish of St. Cyril and Methodius in Čukarica has existed since 1930. There is a small church in Karaburma, the parish of St. Josip Radnik.


Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zemun

The church belongs to the Diocese of Srem. Construction was completed in 1795 on the site of the old church. The Virgin Mary with Jesus is kept in the church. Today she is known among believers as the Lady of Zemun. After the Second World War, the number of believers fell and the church lost its importance. Today, this church is the center of the spiritual life of local Catholics. The single-nave building has a semi-circular vault with baroque elements. The last renovation of the interior took place in 2006, while in 2009, the organ, which dates back to 1910, was restored.


Monastery of St. John of Capistrano in Zemun

The Franciscan monastery of St. John of Capistrano and Anthony was built in 1752. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1807, while the church tower was built in 1838. From 1971 to 2004, it was the seat of the New Belgrade parish of St. Ivan Capistrano, and since 2008, it belongs territorially to the Srem Diocese of the Đakovica-Osijek Archdiocese. In the monastery, the cross is kept under the sign of which the Franciscans came from Belgrade to Zemun in 1739. The present appearance of the monastery and the church dates back to 1830. The buildings have been declared cultural monuments and are under state protection.


Church of Saint Roch in Zemun

The small Roman Catholic Church of St. Roch was built in 1836 on the foundations of the old chapel. It is located in the City Park in Zemun. Today it is occasionally in operation.
