Monuments of Islamic culture in Belgrade

The chronicle and historical records tell us that at the end of the 9th century
Arabs of the Islamic religion appeared in Serbia.

Bajrakli Mosque

Bajrakli Mosque was built at the end of the 16th century. It is one of the oldest mosques in Serbia and the only one in Belgrade that still exists today. It is located in the place where the tent mosque of the Turkish Sultan Selim was once placed. It has had its current name since 1780 because of the prominent banner that marked the beginning of prayer time. In 1868 was restored by the decree of Prince Mihail Obrenović. Within the mosque, there is a madrasa - a religious secondary school. During the Ottoman Empire, there were over 250 mosques in Belgrade. Historically significant and worth mentioning are Hasan-Pasha's Mosque on Kalemegdan, Batal Mosque (located near today's Parliament), Defterdar's Mosque, Sultan-Mahmud's Mosque, Liman Mosque and many others that no longer exist.

Damat Ali-Paša's Turbe (tomb)

Damad Ali Pasha's turbe is located on the Belgrade Fortress. It was named after the Grand Vizier of Sultan Ahmed III, Damad Ali Pasha. The mausoleum was built in 1784 over the grave of Belgrade Muhafiz Ismet Mehmed Pasha. It was restored in 1818 and the commanders of the Belgrade Fortress, Selim Pasha and Hasan Pasha buried there.

Sheikh-Mustafa’s Turbe (tomb)

Sheikh-Mustafa's turbe is located in the center of Belgrade near Student's Park. It was built in 1783 near the place where the Turkish cemetery used to be. It was dedicated to Mustafa Bagdađanin. He was the head of the tekke from that period. It is one of the oldest sacral buildings from the Ottoman period in Belgrade and is protected as a cultural monument. In 2013 was completely restored. Longtime Belgrade mufti, Hamdija Jusufspahić, was buried at this place in 2016.

Mehmed Paša Sokolović's Fountain

The fountain of Mehmed Pasha Sokolović was built in the 16th century on the site of the northwest rampart of the Belgrade Fortress during the reign of this great vizier. It has a rectangular base with a height of 7.5 meters and a width of 6.3 meters. Its stone slabs, from which a trough with iron pipes was made, have been preserved to this day. The fountain was completely reconstructed in 2018.

Delijska Fountain

Delijska Fountain is located in Knez Mihailova Street, in the place where several fountains were demolished over the years. It was reconstructed in 1987 according to the designs of the famous architect Alexander Derok and is a replica of an older Turkish fountain from 1849.

Zindan Gate

Zindan Gate is a defense complex and a passage to the Belgrade Fortress from the eastern side. The beginning of the construction is related to the reign of the Serbian despot Stefan Lazarevic in the 15th century. After his death, Hungarians continued the construction. In the 18th century, the gate ceased to have a defensive function. Since then, the Ottoman Turks began to use it as a passage to the Upper Town and as a dungeon, where its name comes from (zindan, Turkish - dungeon).

Today, over 200,000 inhabitants of the Islamic religion live in Serbia. In addition to mosques and masjids (mosques without minarets) throughout Serbia, the Islamic community also has madrassas (secondary religious schools) in Novi Pazar, Prijepolje, and Belgrade, as well as faculties and academies in Novi Pazar and Belgrade. The beauty of the architecture and the historical significance of the monuments of Islamic culture must not be overlooked or neglected in the territory of the whole of Serbia. The doors of the Altun-Alem mosque from the 14th century in Novi Pazar, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Serbia, are open. In this city, there are many cultural and historical monuments and museums of Islamic culture that should be visited. We recommend tours of the Sultan Valide mosque in Sjenica, the Islam-age mosque in Niš, the mosques in Hisardžik and Ibrahim Pašin in Prijepolje, and Hasan-aga's mosque in Priboj.
