Cultural and spiritual heritage
We will visit Serbian medieval monasteries. Many churches and monasteries are the burial places of Serbian rulers, while for centuries they were places of assembly for the preservation of statehood, culture and spiritual heritage. An authentic testimony of Serbian architecture was created. The fresco-painting of medieval monasteries in Serbia represents the highest artistic range in the world. The Nemanjić dynasty enriched the treasury with the valley of kings, the valley of lilacs.

The Studenica Monastery– UNESCO
After a few hours of driving, we arrive at the medieval monastery Studenica. It was built in 1196 as the most significant foundational work of the Serbian ruler Stefan Nemanja. Studenica is under the protection of world cultural heritage - UNESCO. The Church of the Virgin, due to its construction, architecture and fresco-painting (Crucifixion of Jesus) is the central part of the monastery. In Studenica, there are the relics of Stefan Nemanja, his wife Anastasia, as well as the relics of the first Serbian king and Nemanja's eldest son, Stefan the First-Crowned.

The Gradac Monastery
On the slopes of the wooded Golija mountain, the Gradac monastery was built in the 13th century. It is an endowment of Serbian Queen Jelena of Anjou, wife of King Uroš. Gothic elements mix with the Raška school. The queen's biographer, Serbian Archbishop Danilo, left written traces. The monastery was demolished throughout history but rebuilt again and again. Part of the precious fresco painting inside the Church of the Holy Virgin has been preserved. Lunch break in the beautiful surroundings of the Ibar valley at the Čakmara ethnic restaurant.
Stari Ras (The Old Ras) – UNESCO
Near Novi Pazar, on Gradina hill, stands the Stari Ras fortress from the 12th century. With an easy climb and a 900-meter-long footpath we reach a valuable site. It represents the oldest military stronghold during the development of the medieval Serbian state. Nearby are the remains of a cave monastery. Part of the locality is the settlement of Pazarište or the old Trgovište. The Stari Ras fortress, together with the monasteries Đurđevi Stupovi and Sopoćani monasteries and the church of Saints Peter and Paul, is on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage under the joint name "Stari Ras and Sopoćani".
The Sopoćani Monastery – UNESCO
The Sopoćani Monastery with the Church of the Holy Trinity is located at the place where the Raška River and the Biser Voda River cross. It was built by King Uroš in the 13th century. The preserved monastery frescoes are a true masterpiece of world art. The fresco „Dormition of the Mother of God“ fresco in Paris in 1961 was declared the most beautiful medieval fresco. The Sopoćani Monastery together with the Stari Ras complex is under the protection of world cultural heritage.

Novi Pazar
We sightsee Novi Pazar, located at the crossroads of merchant caravans. We visit the monuments that were created in the 15th and 16th centuries: the Altun Alem mosque - a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, the remains of the old fortress, and Isa Beg's Hamam - a Turkish bath. We visit the Ras National Museum, which preserves money from the Nemanjić period from being forgotten.
The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul – UNESCO
Then follows a visit to the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, which as part of the complex "Stari Ras and Sopoćani" is under UNESCO protection. It is the oldest monument of church architecture in Serbia, which was created in the 8th century on the site of an early Christian basilica, and then rebuild in the 10th century during the time of the Grand Principality of Serbia. In this place, Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja handed over the throne to his eldest son during the assembly, after which he became a monk. It was the seat of the Raška Eparchy. In the 15th century, it raised to the rank of Metropolia.
The Đurđevi stupovi Monastery– UNESCO
"Pillars of St. George"
On the hill above Novi Pazar is the endowment of Stefan Nemanja, the 850-year-old Đurđevi stupovi monastery (1171). In the 13th century, King Dragutin added to the monastery tower and rebuilt the church. The monastery ruined during history, and the restoration is still ongoing. The Đurđevi stupovi monastery is on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage together with the Sopoćani monastery, Ras fortress and Peter's church.
The Maglič Fortress
After a lunch break, we climb up to the medieval fortress Maglič, which is located on a hill above the gorge of the river Ibar, which surrounds it on three sides. The defensive city was probably built in the 13th century during the reign of King Uroš. Because of its position, it remained impregnable to many attackers, protecting the royal estates and medieval monasteries in the area. The name Maglič is derived from the word magla (fog). The base of the fortress is made up of ramparts 270 meters long.
The Žiča Monastery
At the end of our tour, we will be illuminated by the quiet light. Another lighthouse of time on our tour through UNESCO monuments. We visit the Žiča monastery. It is endowment of Stefan the First-Crowned, the first Serbian king, was built at the beginning of the 13th century. The monastery church is dedicated to the Ascension of Jesus Christ. The monastery experiences a solemn moment with the return of Saint Sava from Nicaea, when the monastery becomes the seat of the Serbian archbishopric, where future Serbian kings will be crowned. Like most Orthodox monasteries, it suffered massive destruction. It became a symbol of the renewal of the Serbian people and their faith.
Return to Belgrade with occasional breaks.
